Policia Local has taken action against vendors operating on the Playa de San Juan and Alicante coast.

Officers conducted an operation targeting people selling counterfeit clothing such as football kits and trainers. They also seized bags and purses.

The hawkers who sell refreshments and fruit on the beach are also targets.

Since mid-July four officers are operating in shifts to monitor illegal sales in busy areas like the Esplanade de España, the Paseo de Gomiz, Postiguet beach and the port area.

Four officers are assigned to the Playa de San Juan.

Alicante¡s security councillor, Julio Calero, said: “It is necessary to enforce the rule over occupying public roads and to fight the illegal practice of street sales which is linked on many occasions to counterfeit goods.”

This month, police surveillance has been strengthened after it was discovered that illicit activities were on the rise.

Calero stated that the council was finalising an agreement with the Port Authority to allow officers from both institutions to improve coordination and conduct joint operations against illegal vendors who operate in areas public under the jurisdictions of the port.
