Two in Malaga and three in Alicante

As authorities intensify their efforts to reduce road fatalities, a nationwide crackdown on speeding is underway. 33 new speed cameras are now monitoring drivers throughout Spain.

Two of the cameras have been installed on Malaga’s so-called ‘death road’ – the A-355 which links Coin and Marbella.

Cameras now work in both directions. And unlike traditional speed traps they calculate the vehicle’s average over many kilometres instead of recording it only at one location.

During the first week of the new system drivers who exceed the limit of 90km/h will receive a letter warning them.

After the grace period, drivers will receive fines and points on their license.

The A-355 was given its reputation as a dangerous road after several fatal crashes occurred within a four-kilometer radius.

The stretch has been the scene of 86 accidents in the last five-year period, with 15 people losing their lives and 28 seriously injured.

Alicante will also be seeing three new average speed cameras installed on the A-31 & A-7.

The A-7 in Spain is a dangerous road with 110 accidents between 2018 and 2022 and 158 fatalities.

On the A-31, a serious accident occurs every five days.

The 33 speed cameras that will be in operation this week are part a national plan to install new speed control points on Spanish roads.

This week, new speed cameras will be installed in nine other regions, including Madrid and Asturias.

Every year, speeding causes over 300 fatalities on Spanish roads. That’s about 42%.

The goal of the rollout of cameras is to reduce deaths and serious injury caused by speeding in Spain’s roadways.
