Dept. Q: Season One

Dept. Dept. It’s a dark and slow-burning drama about second chance. The story is set in Edinburgh and follows Carl Morck, a troubled police detective who has just recovered from a case that paralysed his partner. His career was also in doubt. He is given the task of leading a newly created cold case team, which works in an eerie basement without much support. Morck slowly begins to feel a sense purpose with two unlikely friends (Akram is a former Syrian Detective, and Rose is a bright but mentally frail officer).

Based on Jussi Adler Olsen’s bestselling novels, the series unfolds a central mystery over nine episodes. The series is less about shootings and more about digging into the past. This applies to both the cases and the characters. Goode is excellent as Morck.

Enjoy thoughtful crime dramas, such as Broadchurch You can also find out more about Slow Horses, this one is worth sticking with – although the pacing could have been better. It is not flashy. Just smart and well-acted. Netflix has it.

The Better Sibling: Limited Edition

The Better Sister The story begins with a powerful hook: A woman returns home to discover her husband dead in the living room. The investigation soon reveals secrets about her estranged brother and teenage son. Jessica Biel is Chloe. She’s a successful magazine journalist who’s struggling to keep her life in order. Elizabeth Banks is Nicky, Chloe’s older sister who returns to her world after a long time apart. What is the twist? Nicky was the boy’s mother and Chloe took him in after Nicky’s life spiraled out of control.

It’s an interesting setup that keeps you guessing. Biel’s and Banks’ performances are excellent, making their complex relationship believable. As the series progresses, it begins to lose its direction a bit. Flashbacks and strange dream sequences start to distract from the main plot.

Eight episodes is a lot, and it drags at times. If you like mystery-driven family dramas, this is worth watching. Amazon Prime has it.
