Tottenham Hotspur is officially “relieved” [Ange Postecoglou] “of his duties” less than two weeks after he had led the club in winning their first major trophy since 17 years.
Spurs won Europa League by a 1-0 defeat of Manchester United at Bilbao on May 21,2025.
Despite his historic win, and Champions League qualification the 59-year old Australian was dismissed after what the club called a review of performance. It happened during their worst Premier League ever season where they ended 17th, with only 38 point.

Postecoglou, a Celtic player who joined Spurs in 2023, had a two-year rollercoaster ride. In his second season, he won silverware but also suffered 22 defeats in the league and a deteriorating relationship with fans.

Postecoglou made the following statement through his agency CAA Base:
“My overriding emotion is one of pride… That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream.”
“We also laid foundations to ensure that this club does not have 17 more years before their next success.”
He thanked all of his players, supporters, and coaching staff. He called them “legends in this football club” as well as “the lifeblood for Spurs”.
Postecoglou’s reign started brightly, winning three consecutive Manager of the Month awards as Spurs took 26 points from their first 10 league games in 2023–24.
Spurs conceded 65 goals in 2024–25 – more than all but four other Premier League sides – and collected just 78 points across his final 66 top-flight games (as reported by BBC Sport).
Tensions rose after defeats by rivals Fulham and Bournemouth as well as Chelsea. At Stamford Bridge, Postecoglou cupped his ear toward Spurs fans after being heckled – a moment some saw as symbolic of a growing disconnect.
Former England striker Chris Sutton revealed BBC Sport:
Modern football is summed up by “to get someone in, who wins them silverware and then get rid of him straight away.” It’s completely bonkers.”

Who will the next manager be for Spurs?
According to Sky Sports NewsThomas Frank, the Brentford manager, is the frontrunner to replace Postecoglou. Other names include Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva. Former Spurs coach Pochettino now coaches the US national football team.
