Torremolinos – sports city – Number one on Costa del Sol for sports tourism

Torremolinos is the top destination for sport tourism in the Costa del Sol. It has broken new records and shown explosive growth of athletic visitors attracted by the top-notch facilities and the region’s mild climate in comparison to most of Europe.

The year before last, town The number of athletes welcomed in 2024 was 6,444 – a significant increase of 1,985 compared to that year. That’s a 44 percent increase. The influx of sports enthusiasts has driven remarkable economic benefits, with the overall impact from sports tourism soaring 86 per cent to reach €4.4 million, doubling the €2.2 million recorded the previous year.

More and more foreign sports teams taking advantage of Torremolinos facilities & climate

The number foreign teams that used the sports facilities of the council increased by 24% to 277 squads. They were mostly from European countries. These groups stayed at local hotels all year long, generating 34.395, a 28 percent increase in overnight stays over 2024.

Torremolinos is also a popular destination for football teams to hold pre-season training camps and take advantage of the quality pitches.

Torremolinos is a sport-loving city.

Over 16,000 people registered to use the sports services in 2025. The town achieved an incredible 91 per cent occupancy with 9,447 regular athletes using the facilities. More than 7,000 users used day passes, tickets or space rentals to access the venues.

The transformation has been supported by major investments in infrastructure. In 2025, new additions included the Javier Imbroda Pavillion and the renovated Francisco de Asís pavilion, a new roof for outdoor multi-sport court number 1, fresh outdoor training centres focused on callisthenics, and the replacement of artificial turf at the José Antonio Gallardo football field.

Torremolinos has been able to establish itself as one of the most popular sports cities on the Costa del Sol by focusing on health-focused initiatives such as back school. This programme was very successful, and it handled 1,643 bookings.
