Toll road set free – AP46 to Granada open

Starting Monday, March 17, 2025, the AP-46 toll road from Las Pedrizas to Málaga became free for all drivers, a historic first prompted by a major landslide on the parallel A-45 autovía.

After heavy rains and recent storms blocked one lane of the A-45, the Ministry of Transport lifted the toll barriers to reduce traffic chaos. The move is intended to redirect some of the 40,000 vehicles per day that normally clog up the older route.

Emergency repairs have begun to stabilise the A-45’s damaged embankment at kilometre 128.9, where rocks and debris have rolled onto the northbound lane toward Córdoba. Traffic management has forced vehicles to use a temporary 2-way setup between km 128.3 – 129.15. This caused major delays.

Officials noted that while Monday’s traffic was heavier than usual on the AP-46 it is still well below the A-45 weekday average. Toll roads, which were opened in 2011 to provide a faster alternative for drivers, usually charge fees, but have only taken a fraction of the traffic diverted. The A-45 is still being repaired, despite the forecast of more rain and the lack of a timeline for reopening. Drivers should stay updated as the province of Málaga attempts to cope with the aftermath of relentless storms battering its road network.
