Munich is witnessing the end of a era. Thomas Müller, the face of FC Bayern for a quarter of a century, is leaving the club this summer.

The news broke in a joint statement from the player and the club, confirming that Müller’s contract won’t be renewed. Fans, teammates and Muller himself will find it difficult to take.

The 35-year old admitted that the decision was not his. He wrote about it on Instagram. Still, he says he respects it – even if it hurts.

25 years at Bayern: Thomas Müller’s life in red and white

Müller’s story with Bayern began way back in 2000, when a ten-year-old from Pähl in Upper Bavaria walked through the doors of the club’s youth academy. He’s now one of Bayern’s iconic figures after 25 years.

Twelve Bundesliga titles. Two Champions League trophies. The same shirt has won 33 major honors. The only player to have won more in club history is the current captain.
“It’s been an incredible journey,” Müller said, reflecting on the ride. “I’ll always remember the unforgettable moments and amazing people I met.”

Herbert Hainer, the club president, called him “the definition for a Bavarian Fairytale.” He’s not entirely wrong. From local lad to club legend – few players ever live that dream the way Müller has.

Thomas Müller’s final mission: One last trophy with Bayern

With the finish line in sight, Müller isn’t done yet. Muller has one last thing on his mind, and that’s to go out on a good note.
“What I want now is clear – more titles, more moments to celebrate with our fans,” he said. “Let’s win the championship and make it to the final Dahoam.”

His final game in red is expected to come this summer at the FIFA Club World Cup in the US – a fitting global stage for his goodbye. What happens next? Nobody is sure. There’s talk of a move to America, but for now, Müller’s focus is firmly on the present.

There’s one thing that is for sure: When he leaves the pitch in Bayern colours for the last time, it will mark the end of an era.
