Cooler days and Saharan dust head for Spain’s East Coast and Balearics this weekend

This weekend, the East Coast of Spain and Balearics will experience cooler days and Saharan dust.

This weekend, if the recent heatwave has you yearning for some relief on the Costas and in the Balearics then it should be a welcome change. The slow-moving system that is drifting from the Atlantic will likely bring cooler temperatures to several regions while also allowing the dusty air of the Sahara, or “calima”, to reach the Southeast and the Islands.

The cooler relief is coming Friday

Temperatures look set to fall On Friday, temperatures dropped across a large part of Spain. The biggest drop was along the eastern coast. On the Costa Blanca in southern Spain or northern Alicante you may experience a six- to eight-degree drop in temperature compared to the recent days. It should be a little more comfortable now, especially for those who have had to endure the humid nights.

Even though it is still warm, many areas will feel that way. Readings above 35ºC are likely across wide areas, and the Balearics, the Ebro Valley and parts of eastern Andalucia could push towards 38ºC. Storms may occur in the north and center of the country during the afternoon. However, the coastal areas should remain mostly dry.

Saharan dust is heading to the Southeast and islands

Starting Saturday, July 11 dust from the Sahara will start blowing into the southeast Spain mainland and the Balearics. The skies may appear hazy, milky or have a reddish glow. You should be prepared to wash your car if any isolated showers appear.

On Sunday, air quality may be affected in Murcia, Valencia and some Balearic Islands. Keep your windows closed and stay hydrated if anyone in your family suffers from asthma or has sensitive eyes. Dust tends to make it feel muggy even when the temperatures aren’t as high.

What beach life and everyday life means

The beach is still a good option, as the daytime temperatures have cooled down a bit. The mornings and evenings might feel fresh. Be prepared for the hazy appearance of the sky and sea once the dust settles. Pack an extra layer if you plan to go out on the islands.

Storms mainly staying in the North

This weekend, the majority of the storm activity is likely to remain in the north and northwest. Galicia, parts of the mountains, and the Balearics could experience heavy rains, and at times even hail.

Heat returns next week

From the middle of next Week, temperatures will begin to climb again along the Balearics and east coast. Some spots could push back towards 38ºC or even 40ºC by midweek, especially inland from the coast. Thanks to the same weather system, the west of the country will stay cooler.

The next few days will be a mixed bag, with some relief at the beginning of the weekend. Saharan dust and then another warm spell. Stay hydrated no matter what the weather decides.
