Longer evenings are on the way: This is when the clocks will go forward in Spain this weekend

This weekend, the clocks in Spain will be set to a longer evening.

The clocks will finally move forward this weekend. Both expats and Spanish residents can enjoy lighter evenings.

Spain will advance one hour at 2am Sunday morning to 3am.

Canary Islands: 1am – 2am.

It means an hour less of sleep, but longer evenings as the sun sets 60 minutes later.

The process currently in place is for all of Europe to make the switch on the last weekend in March.

George Vincent Hudson was a New Zealander entomologist who developed the concept in 1895. Germany and Austria first adopted it during World War One to reduce their coal usage.

After the summer, the clocks will go back again – but that won’t happen until the last weekend of October.

If you’re unsure as to which way the clocks go during which season, an easy way to remember is that you ‘spring forward and fall back’.

The change keeps Spain in the same time zone as Poland, Serbia and Hungary – all nations whose capital are more than 2,000 kilometres to the east,

It keeps Spain one hour ahead of UK, who shares the same longitude.

Since years, there have been discussions about permanently moving back the clocks to 1940. This would end a Franco era legacy that tried to align the country with Nazi Germany.

Spain’s move was out of step with Portugal and the UK, as well.
