After a delightful Easter weekend with temperatures reaching 30ºC in parts, big weather changes approach Spain for the beginning of the week as a polar trough develops into a powerful rain storm, otherwise know in Spain as a “DANA” low-pressure system. Residents on the Costa del Sol (Costa Tropical), Mallorca and other areas in western Spain should watch out for conditions that are contrasting, with heavy rain causing dust storms while a polar trough develops.

Western Spain braces for torrential rainfall

Models indicate the DANA Midweek, a low pressure system will develop and move to the Canary Islands. Thunderstorms and heavy showers are expected to sweep through western Andalucia and Extremadura, as well as parts of Castilla y Leon. Around the provinces of Sevilla and Cadiz, accumulations could reach up to 50mm within 24 hours. In central Extremadura, 40mm is possible. Rainfall in some areas could reach 40mm.

Mediterranean coast dominated by high temperatures and calima

The eastern and southern parts of Spain, including the Costa Blanca and Murcia areas, Almeria and Granada, and Mallorca, will remain mostly dry. Subtropical pressure will drive very warm conditions Together with an intrusion of Saharan dust. Dust particles in the air may cause skies to appear hazy and reduce visibility. Temperatures are expected to rise above average for the season in many popular tourist areas.

Saharan dust can lead to muddy showers when it rains

The DANA’s uncertain positioning leaves the possibility for showers to reach Mediterranean communities, if easterly wind establishes. The Calima dust in the air can then combine with any precipitation, creating Spain’s famous mud rain. Vehicles and outdoor surfaces will be covered in a reddish brown residue. Meteorologists monitor the situation closely to see if there are any shifts in the weather that could bring isolated showers towards the east.

What residents need to prepare for

Forecasts in the local area suggest that rain will be confined to western areas. If you are travelling from Malaga, Alicante or any other westward destination, it is important to check the latest road conditions. The coastal areas of the east coast will have warmer days, but you may want to limit your time outside during the peak calima intensity in order to avoid respiratory irritation. Do not leave your laundry out in the rain!
