Who said relegation ruins the atmosphere? Gran Canaria has a different vibe.
UD Los Palmas is a rare football team that has a strong fanbase, even though they dropped out of La Liga a few weeks back.
The Canary Islands’ yellow-clad team finished 19th in La Liga during the last season. The club has only collected 32 points and is preparing for life back in Segunda.
But what about the fans?! The fans are still there.
18093 Season Tickets sold in Las Palmas!
Las Palmas already has sold more than 18,000 season passes, nearly 15,000 on just the first day. This is not only impressive for a Spanish club in the second division, but it also makes a statement.
The club launched this season’s campaign under the slogan “Seremos más unión” (“Let’s be more united”). The message was clearly understood by the fans.
The club has kept its pricing unchanged from the last time it was in the second division: starting at €100 for seats in the curve and climbing to €360 for the main stands. Even though there is no top-flight soccer, the demand for seats continues to rise.
A city of just 380,000 people – and an incredible footballing spirit
Last year, Las Palmas had around 25,290 season tickets holders. In 2022-2023 (their last season in the second division), the number was closer 15,000.
In just a few weeks, the sales have already exceeded that level and they are slowly but surely returning to their previous highs.
A city of only 380,000 people has shown an amazing amount of loyalty. Las Palmas is a city with a strong island spirit. While players and managers come and go the fans will always be there. It’s a football culture built not on trophies and transfers but on identity.
Season ticket fever in Spanish second division
They’re not the only team in Segunda Division.
Real Zaragoza has also had a good year in terms of sales. This is another historic club, now stuck at Segunda. Zaragoza fans have once again proven why they are among the most loyal in Spain with nearly 17,400 sold season tickets.
Meanwhile, Cadiz, Malaga and Cordoba are already past the 10,000 mark, even with ticket prices that sometimes start well above €285.
Gran Canaria is experiencing something different. Las Palmas might have dropped a division but their fan base is acting as if the club was about to make a comeback. It’s probably true with these fans.
