These three major projects in Barcelona’s Montjuic are set to transform the area – CSN News

Three monumental halls are being proposed to celebrate the centenary anniversary of the 1929 International Exposition held on Montjuic.

These proposals provide a sneak peek into the first phase for the complete renovation of Barcelona’s Montjuic hill complex.  

The proposals look at the renovation from different angles. The first plan is centered on the construction and renovation of the existing Communications Palace. It was designed by architects Smiljan Radic, Miquel Marine nuñez, Beatriz Borque and Cesar Rueada Bonet.

The second plan proposes construction of a new Barcelona Conference Centre at the Alfonso XIII Palace. Forgas Architectes Arquitectura Sideral, and Alvaro Fernandez Garcia were the architects. The winning design includes a garden, an exhibit hall, and an auditorium for 2025.

The third plan proposes to remodel the dress palace, and the future development of innovation centre at the institution of trade fairs. Bjarke Ingels Group & MIAS Arquitectura drew up the plan. The building will be surrounded by green, with the entrance being the current columns of the Plaza España.

Barcelona council’s  Commission for the Centenary has released images of the winning architectural projects. With sustainability in mind, the plans will transform Montjuïc, as they blend modernity with the historical surroundings.

The three halls are the foundation of the first phase in the renovation of this iconic landmark. The ultimate goal of the city council is to build a cutting-edge exhibition space in the 21st century.st century. 

The jury, which consisted of five experts under the direction of architect Josep Luis Mateo, selected the winners.

The exhibition facilities were updated and made more versatile and flexible, while keeping efficiency and sustainability as a priority. 
The new buildings will be completely self-sufficient in terms of energy consumption thanks to high-efficiency systems and energy-producing geothermal and aerothermal systems.  

The construction of the first phase is expected to begin in 2026. It will be completed by 2029.

The completion would coincide the centenary celebration of the 1929 International Expo. The total first phase of the project is estimated to cost €255 million. 
In the second phase, a new competition for architectural design will be held to remodel the Palacio de las Comunicaciones. The trade fair will continue to operate throughout the renovation.
