Season One of Wayward
A chilling mystery in the Pines
Netflix’s Wayward first season is a psychological mystery with a slow burn that proves most of the time, the scariest creatures are humans. The series, created by Mae Martin and starring Sarah Gadon, follows a pregnant trans woman and her husband (a trans officer) as they return home to their eerie hometown. Toni Collette, as Evelyn’s unnervingly composed Evelyn runs a disturbing boarding-school for “wayward” teenagers. The show has a great atmosphere, with lush forests, eerie sounds, and an undercurrent dread. Although its final scene wobbles a bit, the performances are outstanding. Wayward rewards its patience with a creeping uneasiness that lingers after the credits. Netflix is now streaming across Europe.
The Woman in Cabin 10.
Murder and madness aboard a mega yacht
Keira Knightley is a charismatic and poised actress in Netflix’s The Woman in Cabin 10. She plays a journalist that witnesses something sinister aboard the yacht of a billionaire. It’s a slick mystery based on Ruth Ware’s 2016 bestseller. The film is a wink at its absurdity. Simon Stone creates a breezy thriller of 95 minutes that is packed with punch. Hannah Waddingham’s boozy and razor-sharp character steals several scenes. This is a guilty pleasure journey of twists and turns, gaslighting and chic fashion. Netflix is streaming the film across Europe.
