Ministry of Health starting inspections of mosquitoes for West Nile virus, month earlier than usual

The Ministry of Health has started inspecting mosquitoes for West Nile Virus a month earlier than normal.


The Ministry of Health in Andalucia has begun a surveillance of mosquitoes for West Nile virus-carrying insects. 

Inspections will begin one month sooner than last year and even two weeks earlier than 2023. 

The junta is concerned that the number of mosquitoes carrying the virus may increase due to the rain and heat.

Traps are placed and cells checked to look for viruses.

The environmental conditions in Andalucia make it so that mosquitoes from all over the world can be found there. culex-genus is able to survive nearly all year long, though the likelihood of virus circulation is higher between June and October”, said the Health Administration. 

In the province of Malaga, nine municipalities are considered high-risk for the transmission of the virus. These are: Alhaurin de la Torre (capital), Alhaurin el Grande (regional centre), Almargen (regional center), Antequera (regional capital), Cartama, Coin, Guaro and Pizarra. 

There are 66 municipalities that face a medium-level of risk and 28 others at a low-level.

The first human cases were detected in Guaro in November 2024.

The number of traps in Andalucia has increased this year from 27 to 12!

This is the natural cycle of transmission.

West Nile virus is the most common symptom of WNV in humans. 

People with weakened immune systems and the elderly are at greater risk of developing neuroinvasive disease.
