Greece doesn’t have the monopoly of island magic. Santorini, and Mykonos are the two most popular islands in Greece. They fill Instagram feeds with stunning photos and draw long lines. There are other European islands that offer stunning views.
These lesser-known islands, from the Azores crater lakes to the flower-filled terraces of Madeira offer a connection to nature and culture that is raw and deeply rooted. Where are these islands, in a slower pace that reminds you of summer before it was a business model? What makes these islands different and worth a detour?
Why these islands standout
While Greece tends to be more sun-loving, the Azores and Madeira are more natural. This includes volcanic cliffs and crater lake, as well as natural hot springs. What makes them different is:
- Uncrowded beautyFewer tourists, more breathing space
- Biodiversity: forests, thermal vents, wild coastline — not just beaches
- Culture firstTraditions are shaped by the weather and geography, not tourism
- Sustainability is a focusIn the Azores in particular, nature is at the heart of policy and lifestyle.
Underrated Island Escapes
Start with the Azores. These volcanic islands are located in Portugal, and drift in the Atlantic. There are strange geothermal springs and valleys that look like jungles. Old towns offer a chance to sample local wine and cuisine, and trade the nightlife in favor of local trees.
- What to do is you can hike the calderas of São Miguel.
- Ferraria offers a variety of thermal springs along the ocean.
- Join a whale watching trip. Over 20 species have been spotted.
- Enjoy pineapples and tea grown on Europe’s sole plantation.
Madeira is also in Portugal. It is known as the Island of Eternal Spring. The hillside is dotted with homes that have unique roofs, and the elders serve homemade punch from plastic cups.
- Walking the Dog levadas — ancient irrigation channels turned lush trails.
- Watch clouds spill over cliffs at Pico do Arieiro
- Visit during the wine harvest or the flower festival in May.
- Relax in the volcanic pools of Porto Moniz.
It is the slowness of these islands, their space, and their being that you will remember. This kind of authenticity is the only luxury that remains in Europe in an era where everything seems to be either sold-out or overpriced.
