Williams was selected after two days in Oviedo by a jury that had sifted 30 candidates from thirteen countries.

They described her sporting records as ‘unquestionable’.

The 2016 winner was Spain’s badminton superstar, Carolina Marin. She won Olympic gold back in Rio.

Serena Williams, the ninth woman to win the Asturias Award, is also the fourth tennis player. She follows in the footsteps Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf as well as Spain’s Arantxa Sánchez Vicario.

The €50,000 Princess of Asturias Award is one of eight annual prizes covering different spheres, including arts, literature, film, and science.

In October, the awards ceremony will take place at Oviedo’s Campoamor Theatre.

Each recipient will also receive a Joan Miro reproduction sculpture, a certificate, and a badge.
