Take care! The main reasons people need emergency treatment on New Year’s Eve in Spain, according to a medical expert

Take care! According to a Spanish medical expert, the main reasons why people in Spain need emergency care on New Year’s Day are:

According to medical experts, excessive alcohol consumption and food choking are the two most common reasons for emergency room visits on New Year’s Day in Spain.

This time of year, food poisoning and allergies are also high on the list.

Too much booze leads to urgent medical interventions, especially on December 31, says Dr. María Jesus Cano, medical coordinator of the Emergency Services of the Vithas Medimar Hospital and Vithas Alicante in the Valencia region.

The doctor said that alcohol consumption is a serious matter at any age. This is especially true if it’s abusive or the patient is on medication for a chronic illness or an occasional condition.

It should be avoided by pregnant women and mothers who are still nursing their babies.

Food poisoning also increases during the New Year’s holiday period.

Esther Pastor Salines says, “Food poisoning can be detected by vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain.

If symptoms persist for more than 3 days, people should visit a medical centre. Treatment usually involves fluid replacement.

Pastor Salines advised that isotonic drinks, which contain high levels of glucose and can cause dehydration, should not replace oral serum.

Another reason for people to visit the ER during this season is because they choked on food that was eaten over the holidays.

The Heimlich maneuver can be used to clear a blockage in the windpipe. This will help reduce the chances of the victim suffering from a cardiorespiratory collapse and brain damage.

According to statistics from the National Statistics Institute (INE), asphyxiation by choking ranks third among the causes of unnatural deaths in Spain.

Choking risks increase when people are eating, drinking, and conversing at a shared table.

The sweets could include fish bones or meat, 12 grapes eaten at midnight to celebrate the new year, or even sweets.

Choking can happen to anyone at any age. However, the risk is higher in childhood, specifically between ages one and five.
