Mini wood library for free in Estepona Credit: Estepona Town Hall, Facebook.
Estepona’s town hall has launched a wonderful new idea, which is all about sharing. The town hall set up a “Libros Libres”, aka “Free Books”, network in the city. These wooden boxes, which look like miniature houses, are located in public places, parks and squares.
It’s simple: Take a book and leave abook.
All members of the community are invited to read a book and return it. This is a wonderful way to encourage reading, promote sustainability, and bring communities together.
These tiny libraries are scattered around Estepona in key locations such as La Cala Park del Calvario and Plaza ABC. The book houses are easily recognizable and accessible to everyone. Simply open the book house door, choose a title, and have fun.
This project is intended to encourage people of every age to read and share stories. This is a good way for English-speaking expats to discover books in other languages, or to introduce locals and their language to English titles.
Keep an eye out next time you are out walking, as you may find your next favorite book inside a wooden box. If you already have a book at home that you’ve read, why not give it new life by donating it?
