Surreal deconstructed forms in Fuengirola at the latest José María Córdoba exhibition, “CIRCUS”

Art aficionados on the Costa del Sol are in for a treat in February as the Museo de la Ciudad hosts “CIRCUS”, an exhibition of paintings by acclaimed artist José María Córdoba. Opening on February 12 and running through April 5, the free art show will immerse visitors in Córdoba’s unique world of surreal figuration and deconstruction, combining reality with inventive whimsy.

Córdoba, who has called the Costa del Sol home since 1981, has long been celebrated for his profound engagement with figuration. Since the 1990s he has used deconstruction to begin his analysis. By combining fragments from reality with his own imagination, he dismantles forms. In contrast to his earlier series that were influenced both by cubism as well as futurism, his recent head studies go beyond simple reflections of reality. The head studies instead show a playful interplay between forms, structure and colour, evoking the fractal world, where each colour plane has it’s own resources.

Intense philosophy with plenty of irony

This metaphysical approach does not eclipse the spontaneity of his works. Córdoba infuses irony through recurring elements like smiles, ties, bow ties, masks, and a hat tip to the commedia dell’arte, a theme close to his heart since his scholarship-funded stay in Italy. As critic Natalia Giménez Cid said in a 2015 essay: “Córdoba establishes relationships not devoid of irony… presenting a game of forms, structure, and colour that alludes to the world fractal.”

Renowned writer and National Prize for Cultural Journalism winner Guillermo Busutil praises Córdoba’s oeuvre for its literary undertones and mixing with Derridean deconstruction and explorations of volume, planes, drawing, and chromatic temperature. “Colour is a character in his work, a dreamlike symbol, enigma and fantastic force.

Famous across Europe’s Art Scene

Córdoba‘s international footprint includes works in Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Paris, enriching Málaga’s cultural landscape. “CIRCUS”, a collection of his most recent paintings, invites viewers to explore this fusion between the symbolic and the real.

The exhibition will be held in the Museo de la Ciudad, Calle María Josefa Llarrucea, Fuengirola. Call 952 589349 for more information. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the playful yet profound artistry of José María Córdoba—entry is free, and the show runs until early April
