Mijas’ community organizations are working hard to make sure that families in need are not forgotten as the festive season approaches. The municipal food bank, run by the local Red Cross, is supporting around 200 households this year.
Soroptimist International Costa del Sol, which has been involved in the project for many years, continues to prepare Christmas bags full of festive treats. The initiative aims to give families a little relief at a time when it can be particularly difficult to get by.
Anyone can need help
Daphne Theunissen is the President of Soroptimist Costa del sol. She says that this project is founded on empathy and shared responsibility. She states that it is especially difficult for families to rely on food assistance, but that the situation can change for anyone. She believes that it’s important for neighbours and groups to step in when needed.
Imagine a family of children having to depend on a foodbank. Daphne Theunissen is the President of SI Costa del Sol. We want to bring some sweetness into the holiday season. Everyone can be in a position where they need support, so it’s good to help each other.
Teamwork is the foundation of a tradition
It has become a tradition to prepare the Christmas bags every year for the Soroptimists. Friends and Red Cross volunteers join the Soroptimists to help pack the gifts. Focus is not just on the practical task, but also strengthening community ties by working together.
The project will benefit not only the Red Cross Food Bank, but also Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo, a Las Lagunas-based organization. The association, which supports 150 families, will receive food essentials selected according to their specific needs.
It is possible with the help of community backing
The project was funded by a number of local and international partners. These include the German Helene & Bonnik Hansen Stiftung, GM Cash Mijas, La Cala de Mijas Lions Club and Mijas Reiki & Therapies. The Soroptimists also raised funds through their participation in the Solidarity Tables in La Cala de Mijas.
Soroptimist International Costa del Sol belongs to a global NGO that has more than 66,000 active members in 120 countries. The organization brings together professional women who are committed to educating and supporting women and children around the world.
