‘Superbugs’ could cause more deaths than cancer by 2050 in Spain

MEDICAL experts in Spain have warned that ‘superbugs’ could cause more deaths than cancer by 2025.

The National Congress of Clinical Laboratory held in Valencia discussed the worrying threat of infections due to multi-resistant bacteria.

The increase in ‘superbugs’ makes treatments much harder, increases mortality and raises hospital costs.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that infections caused by bacteria resistant to antibiotics could result in up to 10,000,000 deaths per year if the development, control and prevention of new drugs is not intensified.

The WHO published in 2024 a document about the research priorities for developing new antibiotics to combat multi-drug resistant bacteria.

Dr. Luis Martinez of Cordoba Reina Sofia University Hospital stated: “We face a race with time.”

“Although several new antibiotics that are effective against some of these superbugs became available in recent years, strains resistant to even these state-of the-art therapies have been identified.”

The National Plan against Antibiotic Resistance(PRAN), promoted jointly by the Ministry of Health and Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products, (AEMPS), estimates infections caused from resistant bacteria cause more than 4,000 fatalities annually in Spain.

It calculates additional healthcare costs at over €150 million.

The National Plan says that despite the decline in antibiotic use over the past few years, it is still necessary to promote responsible use, maintain active surveillance and enhance research to prevent any serious issues.
