Sun in Spain as storms move north of Europe

Spain’s unusually stormy recent weather caused by Storm Oriana (and others), Nils (and others), Marta (and many more), and Leonardo is soon to give way for more stable and sunny conditions. According to the latest predictions from the Spanish Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET), rainfall will become scarce across much of the country during the second half of February.

From February 16-22, the atmospheric pattern changes.

There will be a big change This week (February 16-22), the dominant weather pattern will begin. Storms will move to higher latitudes and reduce their impact on the Iberian Peninsula. This is a welcome change from the past weeks, which were dominated by Atlantic Lows and a constant train of precipitation.

Except in the northern regions, rainfall will drop dramatically from Monday, 16th February. The Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands and the southern and east peninsula will see rainfall that is below normal and rare for the season. In contrast, Galicia, the Cantabrian communities, and the Pyrenees are likely to see more of the same wet weather – in fact, a lot more than average.

Temperatures above average in many regions

In the Balearic Islands and in the majority of the peninsula, temperatures will be warmer than normal for the end of February. The southwest peninsula and eastern Canary Islands are exceptions.

The outlook for late February into early March (February 23, to March 1)

In the week from February 23rd to March 1st, there may be more uncertainty. According to current indications, temperatures in most of Spain will be around the normal level for this time of year. The majority of the country is likely to experience little rain. The northern third of the country, as well as some Mediterranean coastal regions and the Balearics could still see occasional showers. AEMET warns this outlook can change a lot in future updates.

Predictions made beyond March 1 are even more uncertain. The data available indicates that temperatures are generally in line with seasonal averages. However, there is no clear trend for precipitation across the country, which leaves room for variation.

Overall, AEMET forecasts a change to a drier weather pattern for Spain, after a wet and stormy beginning to February 2026.
