This Monday, April 13, a powerful storm system will be sweeping through Spain. 10 regions are on alert for strong winds and dangerous sea conditions, as well as falling temperatures. Spain’s weather agency says AEMETThe situation is the most grave along the Mediterranean Coast, where certain parts of the country have an orange warning signalling a serious risk.

Balearic Islands & Catalonia are likely to experience the worst weather conditions, with rough seas & strong gusts already creating concern at early hours of the morning. Other parts of the nation will be affected by wind, rain or even snow.

Orange Alert in the Mediterranean as Waves and Wind Intensify

Most of the unrest is in the east. Menorca, the largest of the Balearic islands, is experiencing the worst conditions. Waves are expected to reach five metres, and the northerly wind will be around 60km per hour. Mallorca is also affected but at a lower level. Yellow WarningWaves are still around three meters high.

Girona in Catalonia also falls under this category. orange alert For coastal conditions, winds can reach up to 70 km/h from the north or north-west with waves reaching four metres. In the Ampurdán area, gusts could climb even higher, with warnings issued for winds approaching 90 km per hour.

Tarragona, further south, is also experiencing strong winds from the north-west, and similar gusts are expected all day. Conditions are expected to be rough for anyone living near the coast. This is especially true in areas that are exposed.

Snow in the Pyrenees, and strong winds across Spain

Inland areas face different challenges. While coastal areas deal with the sea, they are also affected by the weather. The weather in the Pyrenees has changed to wintry conditions, with snow expected at altitudes over 1,100 meters.

At the same, several provinces in the south and inland are under yellow wind warnings. Areas affected include Teruel and Zaragoza in Aragón, Albacete in Castilla La Mancha, and Castellón in the Valencian Community.

Further south, similar conditions are expected in Almería, the Murcia region and Melilla, where north westerly winds could reach up to 70 km per hour. The gusts of wind may not be as intense as those that hit the coast but they are still powerful enough to cause damage, particularly in open areas.

In the north the situation is a little different. Cantabria and Basque Country were warned to expect rough seas, with waves as high as five metres. But forecasts show that the conditions should improve gradually throughout the day.

The temperature drops again, and rain falls across the country

Rain is expected to fall in large areas of Spain, along with the wind and waves. In the Balearics and north of Spain, cloudy skies with periods of rain are expected. Some heavier showers may occur in the early morning hours in southern Valencia, Murcia and Albacete.

Showers are also expected to develop along the Cantabrian Coast and in northern Galicia. Other parts of Spain will experience a mixture of sun and clouds, with isolated showers in mountainous regions and the south-east.

Gleichzeitig, temperatures are dropping again. AEMET forecasts a drop in daytime highs across much of the south, the Atlantic side, the Alborán area, the Balearics and the Pyrenees, as well as in north eastern Catalonia.

Temperatures are expected to drop at night, especially in the southern half, northern plateau, and Catalonia.

After a period in which conditions are milder, you will notice a change, especially if the area is exposed to wind or rain.

The start of the week in Spain has been turbulent

In general, Monday looks to be a tough day for weather in most of the country. Not every region will be affected by severe weather conditions. However, the combination winds, rough seas, and dropping temperatures are enough to alert large areas.

Caution is advised for those living in coastal areas and particularly the Mediterranean due to the condition of the sea. The wind and the colder temperatures in the interior will be the main factors.

According to AEMET conditions may start to ease later in the day in some places, but for the moment, the message remains clear. Spain has started the week with a spell of unrestful weather.
