Storm Melissa will batter Spain with heavy rainfall and 90 km/h winds

Spain’s weather agency AEMET issuing multiple weather warnings, as Storm Melissa sweeps the Iberian Peninsula. It brings strong winds, torrential downpours, and coastal turbulence.

The storm, which began intensifying today, November 4, is expected to continue through to Thursday, November 6, with the worst conditions forecast for Andalucía, Galicia, Catalonia and Aragon.

In a video that was posted on YouTube today, the meteorologist Jorge Rey stated:

“Watch out for strong storms tomorrow in Andalucia. Even after the next day, strong storms are expected in Catalonia.”

According to AEMET’s latest updates, wind gusts could reach up to 110 km/h in mountain regions and 90 km/h along exposed coasts such as A Coruña and Pontevedra. (aemet.esThe agency warns that significant rain is expected in Galicia, with accumulations up to 60mm in just 12 hours.

Key weather risks in Spain and the affected areas due to Storm Melissa

Wind warnings from AEMET:

  • Asturias Mountains and Peaks: 110 km/h
  • 90 km/h along parts of the A Coruña coast.

Rainfall alert: The agency warns that accumulations of up to 60 mm could occur in just 12 hours across western Galicia.

Coastal risk: In northwest A Coruña and Rías Baixas areas, south winds of 62-74 km/h (force 8) and seas from the west/southwest of 5-6 m are forecast.

Duration: Storm is expected to gradually weaken on Friday. However, rain will continue in northern Spain through the weekend.

Those living in Andalucía’s coastal towns should prepare for disruptions to travel and outdoor activities. Strong winds can cause flight delays, cancellations of ferries, and power outages for a short time in rural areas.
Authorities advise caution while driving and to avoid mountainous routes or promenades that are exposed to the ocean. In flood-prone areas, homeowners are advised to inspect drainage systems and secure their outdoor furniture.

Spain should see milder and more stable conditions by Sunday, November 9.
