Storm Goretti ‘weather bomb’ set to hit Spain: Affected areas and what to expect

STORM GORETTI – the first named Storm of 2026 – is pounding the UK, with strong winds, heavy rain and snow, and a wide spread rainfall. Spanish State Meteorological Agency, or AEMETSpain could be next, according to. Just days after Storm Francis passed through, the northernmost regions of Spain will feel the effects of Storm Goretti … and along with it, a so-called “weather bomb” phenomenon.

What is a weather bomb?

The unofficial term “weather bomb”, also known as explosive cyclogenesis, or bomb cyclones, is used when the central pressure in a storm drops more than 24 mb per 24 hours. This is due to the rapid acceleration in the upper atmosphere of air, which can remove the air from an area and cause pressure to fall at sea-level. This results in a faster rotation.

This can be a result of Snow and strong winds can bring down trees or cause structural damage. Storm Goretti dropped 36 millibars between 6:00pm Wednesday, 7th January and 6:00pm Thursday, 8th January, making it a weather bomb.

Storm Goretti has prompted a rare red warning for Cornwall, Isles of Scilly, and Jersey.

The Spanish regions will be affected by the worst of the storm this Friday, 9th January. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, snow and extreme temperature changes Galicia is also included, as are Asturias Cantabria Catalonia and the Basque Country. Also, expect rough seas in the Cantabrian, Mediterranean and Galician coasts. Also, expect strong winds in the Balearic Islands as well as the northeast of Iberia.

This weekend, expect cloudy skies, high temperatures, heavy rains and snow

Across the Iberian Peninsula, residents should expect a cloudy, rainy weekend. However, the Mediterranean coast, and the region of Andalucia are likely to enjoy warmer temperatures. The temperatures will gradually increase over the coming days in the Cantabrian area, Madrid, and Castile-Leon provinces.

The temperature, which was below freezing for many areas of the country in the week commencing Monday, 5th January, will slowly rise from Friday onwards to reach between 5-10 degrees Celsius. Temperatures are expected to reach 15 degrees Celsius in the southern region of the peninsula including Murcia and Alicante. In parts of the Canary Islands including Fuerteventura temperatures can reach 20 degrees Celsius.

Cantabrian, Catalonia and Aragon will experience heavy rains on Saturday, January 10. In central and southern Spain, drivers will have to be alert for heavy fog.

Snow will fall all weekend in high-altitude areas of the Pyrenees and Cantabrian mountains, and particularly in the Cantabrian and western halves of Huesca. Up to 20 centimetres could accumulate in the Huesca Pyrenees and Navarrese Pyrenees above 1000 meters.

Sunday’s storm will lessen and then move on, but it will bring new showers.

The storm is expected weaken on Sunday 11th January and leave Spain. However, clouds will continue to cover much of Spain. According to AEMET a new Atlantic Front will arrive to Galicia, Cantabrian, Castile, Leon, Navarre and La Rioja bringing more rain and even snow.
