Storm Bram: AEMET issues a yellow alert and DANA rainfall forecast for the Andalucian coasts and mountains


Spanish State Meteorological AgencyAEMETAs Storm Bram makes its way towards the Iberian Peninsula, he has issued widespread warnings of all kinds, including orange and yellow alerts.

The storm will bring major weather hazards such as a DANA (Isolated Depression At Higher Atmospheric Levels), a heavy rain, and hazardous coastal conditions. These are most prevalent on the Costa del Sol.

Andalusia is prepared for coastal and rainfall hazards

AEMET has released varying levels of alert for Friday, December 12, across the provinces of Malaga, Cadiz, Almería, Huelva, and Granada. Extreme coastal phenomena and heavy rainfall are the main concerns.

Yellow alerts are in effect along the entire southern coast of Andalusia from west towards east. The situation in Cadiz is especially critical, as an orange alert was issued because of the worsening sea conditions that are expected after 8pm.

AEMET strongly advises The public is advised to take extreme precautions when doing any activity near the coast. They should also remain alert for updates from the authorities, as warnings can be changed at any time.

Malaga prepares for DANA and heavy rains

According to the weather service, Malaga will be most affected by Storm Bram, which manifests as a DANA. This is a phenomenon that produces “intense rainfall.” Jesús RiescoDirector of the Meteorological Center. As a result, yellow alerts for Friday and Saturday have been issued for the Costa del Sol as well as the Guadalhorce Vally.

The yellow alert will be in effect for the majority of Friday’s day, 12pm until midnight. AEMET predicts that during this 12-hour period there will be an accumulation of rain up to 40 litres/square metre. The heavy rains will be accompanied with strong winds gusting up to 60 km/h, and waves of 2 to 3 metres.

Costa del Sol will continue to be on alert through Saturday morning. Forecasts still expect up 40 litres/square metre of rainfall within a 12-hour period. Although official alerts are deactivated, heavy rain is expected to continue for a few days. AEMET predicts a 100% probability of rain from Sunday to Tuesday, with weaker showers.
