Squatters ousted from Marbella 5-star development

Squatters removed from Marbella’s 5-star development

On Wednesday morning, July 9, a large police operation, supported by Desokupa members, was carried out near the old N-340, in Marbella, on the former Marbella camp site.

Operation was to remove squatters from the land who had been occupying it in campervans for several years. As the authorities and Desokupa discussed the occupants leaving, a roadblock was placed.

Four Seasons Marbella is set to transform the site into one of Marbella’s most important luxury developments. Approved nearly two and a half years ago, the ambitious project covers some 300 thousand square metres in the exclusive Río Real area along Marbella’s coastline. It will feature a five-star hotel with 200 rooms and 486 residential units, with urbanisation works alone costing around €20 million. The total investment for the project is estimated to exceed €700 million, making it the Costa del Sol’s most prestigious tourism development to date.

The eviction marks a major step forward for this project. It has faced pressure from the public to continue because of the economic importance it holds for the region. This development highlights a problem that has been growing on the Costa del Sol, namely the negative side of success. As a result of the influx in luxury projects, housing costs have risen, making it more difficult for local families, to afford to work and live in the region.
