Spring has officially sprung in Spain – but what weather awaits in the days ahead?

The vernal (spring) equinox was celebrated in the Northern Hemisphere at 2.46pm CET on March 20. As the Sun crossed over the celestial pole, the length of day and night became nearly equal. This ushered in longer daylight hours as well as the promise for blooming landscapes. This seasonal change is welcomed by many, as it’s often said in Spain that Spring only lasts two full weeks before Summer begins.

Europe is about to explode in colour.

Astronomical spring is more than just extended sunshine. Celestial displays coincide with nature’s renewal. Three stunning full moons will grace the skies in the next few weeks. Already, there are signs that we will be rewarded with a riot of color after all the rain we’ve had so far this year.

Spring evenings are illuminated by spectacular full moons

  • The Pink Moon is celebrated on April 2nd. It was named by North American native peoples in honor of the pink phlox, which blooms during spring.
  • On May 1, the Flower Moon arrives, bringing with it a peak of floral splendour. This phase is characterized by renewal and growth, according to tradition.
  • A rare Blue Moon will follow on May 31, an extra full-moon in the month of its predecessor. These events happen roughly every two-and-ahalf years and provide an extra lunar spectacle, but without a blue tint.

Is Spring here?

Early Spring Weather varies markedly by region. On Monday, March 23 in Spain, a transient low moves rapidly from the north to the south, bringing clouds and showers to Mediterranean-areas including Catalonia Valencia and Balearics. The northern part of Mallorca and Menorca will experience light to moderate rainfall overnight. However, the Pyrenees region and the coastal Girona and Barcelona may see some heavier downpours. Accumulations stay modest, often 1-5 mm, though Granada and Almería might see slightly heavier downpours.

Temperatures remain contained – ie. The temperatures are colder than what most people would like. Coastal Mediterranean spots enjoy mild minima around 10 to 12°C in Barcelona, Palma, Malaga, and Almeria, thanks to onshore breezes. Daytime highs struggle, reaching only 15 to 16°C in Barcelona and Palma, 15°C in Valencia, and 19°C in Malaga under a weak Tramuntana influence.

When does Spring arrive in Spain?

Changeable weather is predicted for much of Europe in the near future, based on anticyclonic dominance. Many areas will experience warmer and sunnier periods, which is in line with the springtime reputation of gradual warming. Although there is no sudden heat, the increased daylight and clearer skies are encouraging. If you’re out on Easter Sunday, pack for a little of everything.

The combination of blossoming fields and changing weather patterns makes this a time to be cherished. Take advantage of the early season’s gifts by taking a moonlit walk or engaging in outdoor activities.
