Torremolinos’ spring is off to a good start thanks to sports tourism. More than 1,000 foreign athletes are visiting the town in April, bringing an estimated €579,200 to the local economy.
At the moment, 48 teams from all over Europe train at the municipal sport facilities. The majority of the teams are from Germany and the UK. Others come from Sweden, Norway, and Holland. They not only fill hotels, but also benefit local businesses such as restaurants, shops and transport services.
This month, swimming is the most popular activity. 26 teams and more than 560 athletes train at the Virgen del Carmen III Pool. The Ciudad de Torremolinos Stadium is home to 323 athletes, representing 18 teams. There are also a few football teams and multi-sports teams in town.
These athletes will generate more than 7,200 hotel rooms during their stay in the city. Easter is a great time to boost the economy, as it brings more tourists. This will be especially helpful for hotels and local businesses that are coming out of a quiet winter.
Torremolinos is becoming more popular as a training location for sports teams in Europe. The mild climate, the quality of its facilities, and its proximity to Malaga Airport all make it an excellent choice.
Torremolinos is continuing to strengthen its reputation as the international hub for sports tourism along the Costa del Sol.
