The Spanish villages where summer hits -5C by night (and 35C by day!)

Spanish villages where the summer temperature can reach -5C (and 35C) by night

Here is the Spanish Summer you never expected.

While the rest of Spain melts in its usual way (or not?) Two tiny mountain villages of Leon, Spain are reversing the script.

Here’s what we are talking about Villaceid You can also find out more about the following: Prado BeneiroSmall villages with 50-60 residents. Locals in these picture-perfect hamlets trade air conditioning and suncreams for heavy blankets.

We’re talking about temperatures below zero in July!

35C in the daytime, -5C at nite!

In these high-altitude villages, it’s July and the thermometer is below zero. It has reached -2.3C at Villaceid, or even -5C at Prado Beneiro. All this after hitting 35°C during the day!

“Nobody believes it, they’re saying it’s impossible,” laughs Ana Belén Gutiérrez, a resident of Villaceid, talking with COPE.

The contrast is really shocking — sun and heat during the day, ice and frost by night. Even in July, the cold is so severe that locals are forced to sleep with thick blankets.

You don’t have a chance to rest your body: it is cold, then warm, and then cold.

“They leave you exhausted, because at night you’re in a cold temperature, you sleep very comfortably, all covered up, and then during the day with that intense heat, well… your body feels a bit tired,” explains Ana.

Natural freezing instead of a refrigerator

The cold in these two villages is so constant that it can sometimes replace kitchen appliances.

Ana Belén shares a local saying: “The cold and the ice are more than enough to keep the food fresh.”

It’s true. Sometimes potatoes freeze overnight and the fridge is only decorative in winter.

Tourists seeking relief from the heat are on the rise

The extreme weather is now a popular tourist attraction. In a time when many parts of Spain are experiencing extreme heat, these frosty towns welcome tourists who want to stay under blankets all summer long.

“At night, being able to cover up — they say it’s wonderful,” locals told COPE.

Climate-conscious travelers are ditching the beaches and heading to the north for a new kind of summer getaway.

We’ll be drinking less beer by the ocean and more hoodies to gaze at the stars.
