Spain’s rental bargains revealed: the ten cheapest places to live

Renting in Spain is affordable if you look beyond the tourist areas and major cities.

Property Platform Idealist Renters can find the top ten affordable cities in Spain. This shows that even outside major cities, Spanish real estate is still a great value. 

The cheapest cities for living are in Andalucia and Galicia.

Zamora

Zamora, in Castilla y Leon, is the cheapest Spanish city. 

Here, a month of rent is €616 on average.

Meanwhile, in Barcelona and Madrid, renters fork out €1,920 and €1,848 per month, respectively. 

Zamora has a population of 60,000 and is a traditional Spanish town with a laid-back pace of life. 

The city has gained the nickname the ‘museum of Romanesque art’ as it is home to stunning medieval architecture. 

There are 24 churches and a cathedral built between the 12th and 14th centuries. 

Renters in Zamora can find apartments of mid-size near the city’s historic center.

Zamora’s churches from the Middle Ages are a popular attraction for tourists as well as renters.

Lugo 

Galicia’s Lugo is a close second with an average rental price of €624 per month. 

Lugo is the only world city that has intact Roman walls spanning 3km. 

Famous for its cuisine (раним урул Greenery, local wines and one of the most important spots on the Camino de SantiagoLugo is an historic city that is distinctively Galician. 

Lugo has a pleasant climate and is popular with renters. 

Rentable flats are located mainly in residential neighbourhoods, just beyond the historical centre. They are spacious and well insulated for the humid winters.

Lugo’s Atlantic scenery is attractive to renters.

Badajoz

In Badajoz, the average rental price is €648 per month. 

Extremadura capital, on the border of Portugal just over two hours from Lisbon is steeped with history. 

It is not a problem. alcazaba It is the largest Moorish-built fortress in Europe, and the site of a bloody battle during the Napoleonic Wars. 

The Carnaval in February is another spectacle that attracts many tourists. 

The winters are mild here and the summers are hot, while most rental properties are modern apartments in low rise buildings. 

Caceres

Caceres, just north of Badajoz is as affordable as its Extremaduran neighbor. 

Here, renters also pay an average of €648 per month. 

Caceres architecture reflects Roman, Moorish and Jewish heritage, which is why it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

A steady flow of tourists is attracted by its history, but the area beyond the historical centre is quiet and residential. 

Ciudad Real 

Ciudad Real in Castilla La Mancha is popular with renters looking to enjoy easy access to Madrid without paying high prices. 

It’s another tie: the average rental price in Ciudad Real is also €648 per month. 

The rental market is dominated by students and university employees, so you will find many flats in close proximity to campus.

Cuenca 

Cuenca, in Castilla-La Mancha, is another UNESCO World Heritage site, where average rents are around €648 per month. 

The city, built by the Moors on a defensive cliff above a deep gorge is famed for the beauty of its architecture. casas colgadas – the ‘hanging houses’ that cling dramatically to the cliffs. 

Most residents reside in the newer areas that extend below. 

Rental properties tend to be modern and practical, while the competition is low.

Cuenca sits majestically on the edge of a ravine.

Palencia

Also in Castilla-La Mancha, Palencia is the final destination where rental prices average out at €648 per month. 

Palencia’s cultural and historic richness is reflected in its Roman ruins and medieval walls, as well as a gothic Cathedral. 

Palencia is quieter, calmer and more residential as fewer tourists visit. 

The rental market in central and northern districts is stable and offers a wide range of apartments at mid-range prices. 

Palencia has a Gothic Cathedral, but without the hordes.

Ourense 

Back in Galicia, the average rental price in Ourense is €664 per month. 

Ourense is a city that offers a variety of thermal baths, and has a milder climate compared to other Galician cities. This makes it a great destination for those who wish to experience the natural beauty of Galicia without being chilled. 

Spacious rental properties are found in the centre and along the banks of the river Miño. 

Jaen

Jaen is the World Capital of Olive Oil in Andalucia and famous for its tapas. 

In Jaen, excellent gastronomy meets affordability – with average rental prices of €672. 

It is an historic city, known for its Arab baths as well as Renaissance architecture. 

The majority of rental properties are located near the city center and university areas. This offers a wide range of flats that are suitable for students and young professionals. 

Jaen is the perfect destination for those who want to experience authentic Andalusian warmth and culture away from busy coastal cities.

In Avila, in Castilla y Leon, renters pay €672 on average for properties. 

Avila, perched high in the mountains, is defined by its medieval walls that date back to 1090. 

Avila is perfect for renters who enjoy the rich history of the city, cooler summers and proximity to Madrid (Madrid can be reached by train in less than an hour).

Avila has medieval walls dating back to the 11th Century.
