Spain’s longest running police dog unit shows its skills to the elderly

Spain’s oldest police dog unit demonstrates its skills to the elderly

Torremolinos’ council has, via its Social Welfare and Citizen Security Departments brought the Police Canine Unit to the community through exciting demonstrations held at senior residences.

The purpose of the show was to demonstrate the unit’s pioneering work in Spain and promote positive interactions between residents and animals.

On April 17, exhibitions were held at the San Carlos and Santa Teresa homes, and the Maritime Hospital. Additional events are planned for May 9, at the Marillac Residence, and May 30, at Virgen de la Victoria. These displays give our elderly neighbours the opportunity to witness the impressive skills and abilities of the canine units, building community ties as well as appreciation for the work and police force.

Torremolinos’ Canine Unit was established more than 25 years ago. It is the first in the country and has set a national standard when it comes to integrating dogs with police work. Comprising six handlers and thirteen dogs – including Labradors, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, and Border Collies – the unit’s specially trained dogs excel in various types of intervention, using their unique abilities.

In addition to performing at old people’s residences, the unit is also regularly seen in schools and training sessions on road safety, focusing heavily on animal welfare.
