SPAIN rolls out the red-carpet for film lovers with a tourism programme which allows visitors to explore their country through the lenses of their favourite films and TV series.

From Pedro Almodovar’s Madrid to the Sevilla sets of Game of Thrones, the programme taps into the growing phenomenon of ‘screen tourism’ – where more than eight million travellers worldwide now choose their holiday destinations based on what they’ve seen on screen.

The pilot projects are being launched by this government-funded project in four distinct Spanish regions: the coastal Formentera region, Sevilla city, rural Galicia and Burgos’ natural landscapes.
Valencia has already proved the concept’s popularity, appearing in blockbusters such as Tomorrowland and popular series like Doctor Who and Andor.
But it’s Sevilla that truly steals the show for Game of Thrones fans, with recommended routes taking visitors from the Plaza de España to the Royal Alcazar, passing through the Triana bridge, Calle Betis, and the Santa Cruz neighbourhood.

The Alfonso XIII Hotel was used as a Californian Villa in Netflix’s The Crown.
The beautiful landscapes of Mallorca were also featured prominently in Game of Thrones as well as The Crown.
Film tourism routes now span the country, from following Isabel Coixet’s latest work in La Rioja to exploring medieval Barcelona through The Cathedral of the Sea, and discovering Navarra’s forests and historic monuments featured in the Baztán Trilogy detective films.

Madrid is unsurprisingly Spain’s film capital. Virtually every Almodovar movie includes at least one scene set in the capital.
Spain is the fourth-most-used country in terms of international filming locations, and second for attracting visitors who are inspired by screen. It’s a perfect fit for this cultural type of tourism.

“We’re pursuing a dual impact,” explains Juan Manuel Guimeráns, president of Spain Film Commission. “Socially we want to restore and preserve Spain’s film heritage, which is an important part of our culture.
“Economically we are looking to boost innovation, creativity and sustainable developments in destinations that have had filming.”
