Spain’s most popular cultural experiences revealed

According to a study by the Ministry of Culture, Spain’s most popular cultural activity is to watch audiovisual material (81%), and listen to music (79%).

The study revealed that 64.9% read at least one novel in the past year, while 47% attended a live performance and 52% visited monuments or historical sites.

Book Reading Remains Popular

In the live show category specifically, 24.7% of tickets were purchased for theatres, 3.9% for operas, 32.1% for pop music concerts, and 9.7%, classical music events.

The cultural consumption in Spain is at its highest level since 2002-03, the first time the study was conducted. It’s also the highest since 2018-19.

Despite the rise of technology, the majority, 60.8%, read a book in its original ‘hard’ copy, while 29.8% opted for a digital or audiobook format.

A little over 59% read novels in their spare time. The majority of them preferred contemporary fiction (82%).

In the last quarter, 83% of people who bought a book did so at a store.

The reading statistics are encouraging, as they have increased by 7.2% from the 2005-07 study.

In terms of music listening, 56.7% listen to it every day and 77.8% do so once a month.

Spanish pop and rock is the most popular genre, followed by foreign music (43.4%)and Latin (31.7%).

For cinema, 48.5% attended at least one movie a year. People aged 15 to 19, however, were the most likely to attend (79.1%).

According to the Ministry of Culture, 74% of those surveyed have a home subscription to an online content platform. This is a 15% increase from its study for 2021-2022.

The most popular subscriptions are for film and series (64.5%), followed by music platforms (42.3%) and television (39.6%).

The survey is the first to include data on podcasts. 14.7% of respondents listen to them.
