Malaga’s holiday season begins with a wintery feeling, forcing all to prepare for more unsettling weather. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency has issued a Yellow Alert for heavy rain this Friday night and Saturday morning. The alert is aimed at the Costa del Sol region, Guadalhorce valley, and Axarquia.
The warning is activated at 9pm until midnight. Some forecasts even extend up to 3am. Potential downpours could deliver up to 15 litres/square metre per hour. This will be a heavy, short downpour with the possibility of flash floods and hail. Thunderstorms can accompany showers, particularly in areas that are alerted. Ronda and Antequera are exempt from the yellow alert, but rain is still expected.
The start of a week with wintery, inclement weather
This meteorological event begins a period of prolonged instability. Upper-level depressions will bring on more rainy weather. Sunday’s forecast includes widespread rain and a sudden, sharp temperature drop across the province.
In Malaga city, showers precede next week, but Christmas Eve currently shows a low chance of rain, though Jack Frost will be nipping at your nose, with mid-afternoon highs around 15°C. Residents are advised to prepare for colder nights by adding scarves and warm layers to their holiday wish lists.
Rain is likely to continue through Christmas Eve in inland zones such as Ronda and Antequera, so umbrellas are a great stocking stuffer.
Snow expected in high elevations
With the incoming cold air mass and lowering snow levels over the weekend and into next week, higher elevations in Malaga’s mountains—such as the Sierra de las Nieves, Sierra de Axarquia, or peaks like La Maroma – could receive a reasonable dusting of snow. This pre-Christmas rare snowfall adds an attractive winter layer to the rugged terrain, making it look festive from afar.
Due to the possibility of flooding and reduced visibility, authorities urge caution on the roads. Keep up to date via Aemet Any changes will be reflected in the text.
