Spain is making significant progress in modernizing its traffic enforcement with the use of cameras powered by artificial intelligence (AI). These advanced systems will gradually replace traditional cameras and offer a more accurate and efficient monitoring of traffic violations.
Around 250 cameras are already deployed in cities such as Estepona to monitor traffic 24 hours a day. These cameras can not only track vehicle speed, but also classify them based upon type, color and weight. They provide valuable data to local authorities. AI technology can improve traffic management and road safety by providing a real-time analysis on traffic flow.
The shift to AI technology is also being rolled out in other areas, such as Dénia, where 130 AI cameras will soon be installed to enhance both security and traffic control. The cameras equipped with license plate detection and advanced analytics will enable law enforcement to monitor the traffic and ensure compliance with safety regulations. This project’s first phase is expected to be finished by 2025.
Madrid has also decided to follow suit and install AI cameras in zones of high-security, such as areas that are prone to traffic offenses. These systems will increase the city’s ability to monitor traffic laws and enforce them, by using AI for license plate recognition and detecting violations.
The adoption of AI-powered cameras is part of a larger trend to incorporate advanced technologies in Spain’s road security initiatives. Along with traditional systems, innovations such as mobile speed cameras and ‘invisible’ radars are being introduced to ensure drivers adhere to speed limits and road safety rules.
These developments are a reflection of Spain’s commitment in enhancing road security, reducing traffic offenses, and improving efficiency with the use cutting-edge AI.
