Spain train disaster death count rises to 40 after body found in damaged carriage

The death toll from the train accident in Adamuz, Cordoba Province on Sunday has risen to 41 as of Tuesday.

Oscar Puente, Minister of Transport, said that a body was found when a crane was used to lift a damaged carriage.

Officials have repeatedly warned that the death count may rise, with emergency workers still looking for bodies among what Andalucia president Juanma Moreno called ‘a twisted mass of metal’.

The accident occurred on Sunday, 7.45pm. It happened when the tail of a train from Malaga to Madrid carrying 289 passengers went off the tracks.

It collided with an incoming train traveling from Madrid to Huelva.

Officials are continuing to investigate the causes of the incident which Puente described as ‘strange’ since it occurred on a straight line and neither train was speeding.

He claimed officials had discovered a broken section in the track which could be linked to the accident. But he also said that was just a theory and it could take up to a week to come to any conclusions.

Tuesday, the King and Queen Letizia plan to visit Adamuz along with a Cordoba Hospital where many of those injured are still receiving care.

The Health Authorities reported that 83 patients were treated, and 39 remained in the hospital as of Tuesday morning.

The Guardia Civil collects DNA samples from families who believe they may have relatives among the unidentified deceased.

The three-day national mourning period began on Tuesday.
