Spain sees drop in crime – but sex attacks spike and attempted murder rockets up 20%


Reported crimes in Spain decreased by 2.8% during the first quarter 2025 compared with the same period in 2018.

The Interior Ministry released figures on Wednesday that showed 589,683 crimes were registered between January and march.

Only a little over a quarter of reported offenses involved cybercrimes.

The overall number showed significant increases in rapes reported (up 7.6%), and reports of drug trafficking (up 4.9%).

The most dramatic increase was seen in the number of cases of attempted murder, which increased by 19.9%.

In the last year, there were 40.6 non-cyber incidents per 1000 people. This is one of lowest figures ever and it has decreased by 3.2%.

The ratio of cyber crimes to 1,000 people has fallen by 1.2% despite a recent trend towards an increase.

Scams that involve computers make up 87.8% all cybercrime. They have also fallen by 3.5%.
