Spain secured its place in the Billie Jean King Cup in Shenzhen with a resounding victory over Slovenia, beating the adverse conditions of the qualifying tie.
The tie was level at 1-1 following Friday’s match of singles. Spain relied heavily on the doubles win by Sara Sorribes, Aliona Bolosova and Kaitlin Quivedo to seal the tie.
Spain faced Slovenia in Portoroz on a surface that was chosen by the host. The team still played with poise and resilience.
The doubles played a pivotal role, with Sorribes coming back after a long break due to mental health issues and Bolsova approaching retirement in the next few weeks.
The pair defeated Veronika Erjavec & Nika Radisic for the first ever time 6-4,6-3. They recovered from a set deficit in each of the two sets to give Spain the lead in the tie.
