Spain braces for wintry chaos: New DANA unleashes three days of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and snow

Spain prepares for wintry chaos as the new DANA unleashes heavy rain, thunderstorms and snow

The new low pressure front that is moving into Spain will bring three days with heavy rains, thunderstorms, or snow in many regions. This isolated high-altitude disturbance (or DANA in Spanish) brings a harsh cold snap, wintry conditions, and disrupts a calm start to meteorological spring.

Monday is a day of shifting showers with mountain snow

Precipitation From the northwest, the storm will move progressively towards Castilla y Leon and Madrid. It will then continue on to Castilla La Mancha, Extremadura, Andalucia and some parts of the interior southeast. Stormy rains with hail are possible in some areas. Catalonia, the Balearics and other regions may experience lingering instabilities later this week.

The cold weather will come in a wide variety of patterns. DANA episode. Showers in the UK will be unpredictable and vary from place to place, rather than being uniform. The cold air will descend over the mountains, bringing down snow in Spain’s interior, as low as 800 meters.

Tuesday is a day to focus on the Andalucia region and the Mediterranean

As the DANA center positions itself between Andalucia, the Med and Murcia, attention turns to the south and east. Thunderous, heavy rains will intensify in eastern Andalucia and the Strait Area, Ceuta Melilla Murcia eastern Almeria, then the Valencian Community. In these zones, the day is marked by localised heavy rainfall.

Snow warnings continue to be issued for the mountainous southeast. Snow levels may drop below 1,000 metres at times in areas like Guadix Baza in Granada. Accumulations are expected to exceed 5 cm. Parts of the Valencian Community, including Mallorca, are likely to be covered by yellow rain alerts. Overall, Tuesday is the most disrupted day in the Southeast.

Wednesday brings a gradual end to the unrest

Melilla and the eastern Andalucia regions are expected to experience rain on Wednesday. As the system weakens, the intensity will decrease. After a few hours, temperatures begin to recover slightly. This is a sign of a gradual return to milder spring conditions.

This sequence will bring cold and changeable weather, not extreme conditions that last for a long time. Variable precipitation can cause problems in daily life, including travel disruptions and the need to closely monitor official weather alerts. March is continuing to be unstable, and experts predict possible DANA systems for the rest of the month.

Residents in Spain should be prepared for a wintry surprise early in the spring. Keep warm layers and umbrellas close at hand. Do not put away your winter clothes just yet. Instead, keep your fingers crossed that the weather will warm up over Easter.
