Spain enters unchartered territory with arrival of record-breaking 19th storm – and just two names left before list runs out

SPAIN faces an uncharted area as the list of storms nears its end, with only 2 left by mid-March.

Storm Therese is the 19th named hurricane to strike Spain during the season 2025-2026. There are more storms in the Atlantic and a mini list could be looming.

It is a first in history since the storm-naming system began during the 2017-18 winter season.

The previous record was 17 thunderstorms during the season 2023-24.

The official storm list is down to just two names this year.

Meteorologists may have a problem if a third storm occurs this season.

The countries of southwest Europe will then agree on five more names in alphabetical order, from A-E, if the list is not long enough.

Experts believe that the unusually large number of storms in Europe is due to blocking anticyclonic patterns.

This has caused the Atlantic circulation to be altered and more fronts to pass over Iberia than usual in mid-winter.

Greenland, Scandinavia, and Greenland are experiencing persistent anticyclones with high pressure. These systems cause air to rise and form clouds and precipitation.

Normaly, the Azores high and Icelandic low regulate storm paths. This keeps many Atlantic storms from Spain during winter.

The current blocking patterns are forcing storms to seek alternative routes. This leads to prolonged rain and gray skies across the nation.

The State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, confirmed that unusual atmospheric conditions were behind the record-breaking season of storms.
