It’s April 1 and Spain has just stepped into spring – but if you’re expecting warm, settled Easter weather, you may want to rethink your plans. Jorge Rey’s forecast, which is known for accurately predicting the Filomena Snowstorm, indicates a cooler and wetter April as Semana Santa approaches.
Based on his most recent outlook, cabañuelas In the next few days, northern and central Spain may experience temperatures below average, as well as rain, and there is even a chance of snow. Conditions will then change again at the end of the month.
Semana Santa 2019: Expect a cold start in April
It is important to plan ahead. Easter week in Spain is one of Spain’s busiest travel times, with road trips, processions and last-minute getaways all over the country.
The earliest evidence of the existence of the The weather Your side has always been with you. Aemet reported that, in the last days of March, there was calm weather, very little rainfall and temperatures at or near normal levels. It was a pleasant start to the spring.
However, as April gets underway, things could take a new turn.
His latest videoJorge Rey says that Semana Santa may be unsettling in many parts of the country. This is especially true in the central and northern regions. He believes that the cooler than normal temperatures will last until April 6, which is Easter Monday this year.
Rain is expected in several places, and snow at higher elevations has not been ruled-out. It doesn’t mean there will be a lot of snow, but just enough to remind us that winter is not over yet.
For anyone planning to be outdoors – whether it’s watching processions or travelling between cities – it could mean keeping an umbrella close by rather than relying on spring sunshine.
Who is Jorge Rey – and what are the cabañuelas?
Jorge Rey, a meteorologist who doesn’t follow the traditional model, has become well-known in Spain for correctly predicting Storm Filomena, in 2021. This storm caught many people by surprise.
He bases his forecasts on the cabañuelas, a centuries-old method of predicting the weather by observing natural patterns – things like wind direction, cloud behaviour or temperature changes at specific times of the year.
This is not the same model as Aemet’s modern forecasting, nor does it replace them. But every time he shares a new outlook, it gets attention – especially when it lines up with major travel periods like Easter.
His predictions, while not a precise prediction but a trend to be followed rather than a forecast in itself, still give us an idea about what April may turn out to be.
After Easter: a brief period of sunshine, followed by more rain
Rey predicts that the weather will remain unpredictable even beyond Easter.
Rain could return in western Spain shortly after April 6. This is especially true from April 8 and onwards. This unrest may last for a few more days before the weather improves.
Around April 12 or 13 he predicts the arrival of high-pressure systems, which will bring calmer and sunnier weather for several days. Temperatures could rise noticeably during that time, and some areas may see temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees.
It’s the kind of weather many would expect in April – but it may not last long.
Dust, storms and another shift in April
By the middle of the month, patterns could again change.
Rey predicts that another front will move in from west around April 16-17, bringing new rain. This could develop into storms across parts of the southwest, including areas like Extremadura, Huelva, Cádiz and Seville.
The weekend following, the 18th and 19th of April, could bring something a bit different. According to his prediction, a low pressure system could form near Morocco and push calima (Saharan Dust) towards southern and eastern Spain.
If that happens, areas such as Málaga, Almería, Murcia and even the Canary Islands could see hazy skies alongside unstable weather.
Rey says that more Atlantic fronts are likely to arrive towards the end of this month, affecting the north and west. Around April 27-28, a more active system could enter through Galicia and bring widespread rain and cooler air to mountainous areas.
The month of May may be a difficult one
Overall, the forecast indicates a kind of stop-start April.
The month may bring rain, but also cooler spells and brief warm ups. This pattern can be difficult to predict, especially when Easter is approaching.
Updates from the official website are available as usual. Aemet Rey’s outlook is the most accurate for daily conditions. But Rey’s outlook gives a broader sense of what might be coming – and for now, it suggests that this first week of April may feel a bit more like late winter than early spring in some parts of Spain.
If you are going on vacation this week, packing for both seasons is a good idea.
