Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has mobilised an extensive winter road‑clearance operation across several regions as snow and ice warnings prompted heightened Weather Alerts for this weekend. The ministry confirmed that 693 snowploughs and more than 130,000 tonnes of de‑icing materials are in place to support road safety in Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León and Catalonia.
The ministry’s Plan de Vialidad Invernal is a strategy for maintaining the national road network during winter weather conditions. The deployment of the agency represents a significant increase from earlier this week when 541 machines had been prepared to combat snow in northern regions.
Alerts Trigger Extended Deployment
The decision to expand winter response was taken after the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET) issued orange‑level snow There are warnings in place for the weekend of Friday and Saturday.. If precautions aren’t taken, these warnings could indicate significant snowfalls that can disrupt travel and everyday life.
In Asturias, Cantabria and Castilla y León, the alert was issued for both days due to persistent snowfall expected at various altitudes. Catalonia’s orange warning was set for Saturday, further justifying the larger operational footprint of snowploughs and de‑icing resources.
The orange level of alert is one the more serious levels in Spain’s system of meteorological warnings, and signals potentially hazardous weather which may affect transport and infrastructure.
Winter Road Safety is a Focus
The ministry emphasized that 130 835 tonnes of de-icing agents (such as salt) are being used in conjunction with the snowploughs to prevent the formation of ice on roads. These materials help to maintain traction and reduce the likelihood of accidents on key inter‑regional routes.
Snowploughs and de‑icing operations are most active on major state highways and roads linking provincial capitals and rural areas prone to severe winter conditions. According to officials the winter plan’s objective is not only to clear snow but also ensure comfort and safety for motorists navigating potentially dangerous conditions.
The Ministry has urged drivers to monitor weather and road conditions updates via official channels including the social media accounts of the Transport ministry and information platforms operated by AEMET. the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT).
Preparedness for Weather Forecasts
The snowplough expansion program Forecasts continue to predict cold temperatures and precipitation. Long‑range models indicate that snow accumulation may persist in northern interior areas and mountainous zones throughout the weekend, requiring sustained maintenance efforts.
Some regions, in addition to experiencing snowfall, are also experiencing temperatures below freezing, which can lead to ice forming on road surfaces. This is especially true at night or when the area is shaded. Snow and ice are a major winter hazard, which is why the Transport Ministry has developed a winter plan to prepare for this combination.
Public Warned of Prudence
Authorities across the country have emphasized that it is important to exercise caution when traveling during weather alerts. Before driving, drivers are encouraged to check weather forecasts and road conditions, plan alternate routes, and make sure their vehicles are prepared for winter travel. This includes chains and winter tyres, if appropriate.
Alerts from AEMET and DGT include real‑time interactive maps and notifications on road closures, speed restrictions and advisories for specific stretches of the network. The tools are designed to help drivers avoid the areas worst affected by snow and ice.
Winter Maintenance Continues
In previous weeks, similar activations occurred in various parts of the country as cold fronts brought snow and frost to several provinces, including earlier operations deploying dozens of snowploughs in Castilla y León and Madrid.
Officials say that maintaining mobility and security on Spain’s highways in winter is a coordinated task involving national, regional and traffic authorities. The 693‑machine deployment represents one of the largest mobilisations of winter maintenance resources this season.
