Spanish health officials have confirmed that British tourists entering Spain don’t need private medical insurance.
The clarification comes after days of confusion online and on social media, with some reports claiming that travellers without insurance could face fines of up to €6,900 at the border.
According to a spokesperson of the Spanish Ministry of Health, there is no law that requires British visitors to buy private health coverage in order to gain entry.

The ministry said it recommends that travelers purchase travel insurance with medical coverage. This is especially important for people who plan to stay more than 90 days, or whose UK Global Health Insurance Card or European Health Insurance Card are no longer valid.
The UK government’s advice is echoed in the guidance, which says that GHIC cannot be used as a replacement for travel insurance. It also does not cover private medical treatment, repatriation and certain activities, such as adventure or skiing.
