Over 156 days after the catastrophic DANA floods, Soroptimist Spain launched ‘Soroptimist a tu lado’ to aid women small-business owners running cafés, workshops, and studios who had lost everything. Floodwaters destroyed walls that took months to dry and destroyed irreplaceable items.
Three ways were used to support these women: First, the Soroptimists provided emotional support by listening to their stories, many of which included depression after a disaster. Second, legal support was offered, as a lawyer prepared a document clarifying the rights of renters for those who were unable to use their damaged property. Thirdly, financial aid was distributed, donating over €18,000, with €1,200 to €4,000 allocated per woman. Even though it only covered a fraction, the financial aid helped with recovery.
Soroptimists stood in solidarity with the women who were resilient and helped rebuild. Soroptimists clubs from across Europe provided support, including France and The Netherlands. They also supported the Costa Women’s Raffle at the International Women’s Day Event and SI Costa del Sol’s jazz concert.
Fundraising for essentials such as electrical repairs, painting and materials continues. Carol from Paiporta has shown the healing power of art by rebuilding her school and dreaming about a new kiln that could be used in the community. The crisis may have faded off the headlines but recovery continues.
Soroptimist Spain will continue to support the cause with additional fundraisers. For details or to donate, contact soroptimist.costadelsol@gmail.com or visit www.costadelsol.soroptimist.es.
