Soroptimists campaign to rebuild DANA-hit community

Soroptimists rebuild DANA-hit Community

The DANA floods of October 2024 left a path of destruction in the province of Valencia. Women lost their homes and livelihoods.

Soroptimist Costa del sol, along with other Soroptimist Clubs in Spain, responded by launching a support campaign under the name Soroptimist a tu LadoA project that is based on solidarity, practical assistance, and long-term dedication.

In January they visited Paiporta, one of the worst-hit towns by the floods. The women they met there had lost their livelihoods. Carol, a teacher and artist who had lost her art school, was one of the women they met. Carol, an artist and teacher who lost her art academy, accompanied them on a stroll through town. She shared stories from her neighbours as well as the damage. It was obvious that the damage went beyond the physical structures; it affected the entire community.

Carol talked of the parents who encouraged her to open her academy again. The parents realized that their children needed a creative outlet to help them process what happened, and to be able to work with their own hands. Aura, a Soroptimist, has been in contact with Carol regularly since December. She offers support and follows her progress both personally and professionally.

Carol is now preparing to reopen the art academy at a more secure location. Her dream is to build a ceramic kiln that can be used by the entire town, not only her students. It’s an inspiring vision: a place for connection, creativity, and healing. The Soroptimists adopted this dream. The Soroptimist International of Europe Disaster Fund has already provided a part of the funding. They want to raise the rest of the money to buy the kiln, and to help Carol realize her community project.

The Soroptimists intend to return to Paiporta by the end of summer to see the new academy in action and to provide feedback on its progress. A Malaga-based artist has offered to teach a ceramics class, a first exciting step towards what the town hopes will be a vibrant and creative hub.
