Soroptimist International strengthens ties

Soroptimist Costa del sol hosted its sixth annual Summer Party at Mijas. Members, guests and local dignitaries were all present for an evening filled with music, celebration and community spirit.

The event was opened by President Daphne Theunissen, who thanked all attendees for their support, including Councillor Mario Bravo, representatives of the Foreigners Department and partners such as Costa Women, La Cala Lions and Red Cross Mijas.

Janet Powell gave a stunning performance, and her previous collaborations with the organization aided the victims of DANA floods. This year’s party raised over €500 to fund Soroptimist’s expanding initiatives, including sponsorship of the Mijas Union Basket girls’ basketball team and support for VIOGENEX, a programme for domestic violence survivors. The group is also a partner with the local food banks run by Red Cross Mijas as well as Asociacion Nueva Cultura del Desarollo Tzoani.

Soroptimists plan to return to Paiporta (Valencia) to assist women in rebuilding their lives, through the initiative “Soroptimist a tu Lado”. The deadline for the Soroptimist Award has been extended to September 22. This award is given to candidates who promote sustainable food systems and are innovative in their technology.

A major highlight is the upcoming Soroptimist Leadership Academy for Women, set for November 5–11 in Mijas. The academy, which will take place in Mijas from November 5-11, will host 24 participants representing 17 European countries.

The evening concluded with a toast in honor of Soroptimists’ mission to empower women and uplift communities. For more details, contact soroptimist.costadelsol@gmail.com.
