Spain’s solar plant will turn sunlight into jet fuel

Solar energy will be converted into jet fuel at Spain’s new solar plant

When people think about solar energy, they imagine panels that can charge electric cars or homes. In Southern Spain, however, something completely new is being developed.  Spain is going to lead one of aviation’s biggest revolutions—and it all starts with the latest solar power plant.  If it succeeds, this could change the way we fly and how we power industries in future.

The Beginning of Progress

Swiss Company Synhelion, In Spain, the first commercial plant to produce jet fuel directly from sunlight is being built. It’s not electricity but actual aviation fuel, which planes can use without any adjustment.  Aviation accounts for a large percentage of global carbon dioxide emissions (between 2 and 3%), which is growing rapidly. We can do the following with solar fuels: Cut aviation emissions dramatically, and turn CO₂ into a resource. By 2033, the goal is to produce one million tonnes of jet-fuel annually. This plan is projected to cover half the sustainable aviation needs of Europe.

Why Spain?

  • Perfect sun conditions: Southern Spain is home to one of Europe’s highest and most reliable solar radiation sources. The area is also home to Europe’s biggest concentrated solar power plant.
  • EU Innovation Funds The European climate & energy goals are driving significant investments into alternatives to fossil fuels. Spain is home to Europe’s largest CSP plant.

The new Spanish solar jet fuel is not just another “green experiment.” This is a glimpse into a future in which the sun will be able to power our world and flights. Solar fuel is not a milestone. If it becomes more widespread, solar fuel could help major airlines like Ryanair and Iberia meet climate mandates while not having to ground aircraft or raise ticket prices. Spain bets on the future of clean transportation, both on the ground as well as in the air, powered by our oldest engine: The Sun.
