Apple may finally let users replace Siri and it could change everything in Europe
Siri could be on its way out, at the very least in Europe, after nearly 15 years in our pockets answering our awkward queries. Apple is said to be preparing for a major switch that will let iPhone users swap Siri out for another voice-assistant, possibly putting an end to one of Apple’s most iconic features.
Siri losing ground to AI voice assistants for iPhone
According to BloombergApple’s Mark Gurman is a well connected tech journalist. Apple is currently working on a new feature that will allow users to select a different voice assistant for their iPhones. Siri can be replaced with ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity by a single command.
It’s not just about user preferences. The move is a direct reaction to the Digital Markets Act in Europe (DMA), which has already forced Apple into making major changes to its iPhones across Europe.
This change could have a major impact. Siri has been viewed as less capable than other AI assistants, despite having a head start. In fact, some users already bypass Siri with external AI tools for daily tasks — from setting reminders to getting smarter, more conversational answers. Siri may become a forgotten icon if these tools are natively integrated.
Apple is preparing users to move from Siri to AI alternatives
Let’s not lie: Siri doesn’t age well. Apple’s Voice Assistant can seem outdated and cumbersome when compared with today’s modern language models. Many users are frustrated by the fact that they have to repeat their simple commands over and over again, wait for too long before getting a response, or get vague answers when what they really need is precise assistance.
Apple could be quietly preparing Siri’s demise by allowing real competition and granting these assistants access to iPhone features and settings. This is a small but significant change.
What’s telling is that Apple is also working on a ‘new Siri’, reportedly powered by its own large language model. However, insiders have said that the revamped version will be developed separately from Apple’s AI system. This could mean that Siri’s role in Apple’s AI future is less important than it was previously.
Siri is struggling to remain relevant in the face of fierce AI competition
This isn’t a simple technical update. It’s also a symbol of a shift. Apple’s notoriously closed software approach is radically altered by allowing users to remove or replace Siri. While the change was made to comply with EU regulators, the message is clear: Apple has realized that it is behind the AI game and will now open the door even if it means stepping back.
Siri is still the most prominent feature on iPhones. But as AI assistants get smarter, faster and more integrated, it’s not hard to imagine a future where saying ‘Hey Siri’ feels like a thing of the past.
