Siemens is opening a cutting edge data centre hub in Madrid in Spain as the country becomes a key player for Europe’s digital future.

Siemens Smart Infrastructure announced plans to establish a new technology hub for data centres in Madrid. Support operations will be based in Aragon. The centre will be collaborating with existing teams from the Netherlands, US and India.

This is a major step in supporting the rapid expansion of Spain’s Digital Infrastructure. According to Siemens’ press release, This move is a reflection of its commitment to the “development of sustainable, resilient and efficient digital infrastructures” throughout the Iberian Peninsula.

The Spanish data centres market is growing. Morgan Stanley has predicted that the number of data centers in Europe will grow fivefold in the next decade. Spain is well positioned to absorb pressure from hubs like Frankfurt, London Amsterdam, Paris and Dublin.

Spain’s appeal is increasing for several reasons.

  • Strategic geographical location
  • Strong fibre connectivity
  • Renewable energy sources are abundant

Spain DC’s Data Centers: State of the Industry Report 2024 estimates the country could attract up to €13 billion in investment in the coming years – even in its most conservative scenario.

Fernando Silva, Siemens Spain’s CEO, stated: “The opening of this hub underscores the importance of data centres for Siemens, globally as well as specifically in Iberia.

“The exponential growth of the cloud and AI workloads presents a significant business opportunity but also challenges… The launch of this hub in Madrid marks a key milestone on this journey.”

Demand for energy is increasing. Global data centre energy consumption is expected to double by 2030. The International Energy Agency reports that the global data center energy consumption reached 415 TWh.

The Green Deal and boosting jobs in Madrid

The Madrid Centre will offer a full range of support services, including

  • Power and Automation Solutions
  • Digital twins for thermal optimisation
  • Fire safety, Microgrids and Physical Security
  • Lifecycle Management and Financial Services

Siemens claims that the hub will reduce costs for customers and improve sustainability through the combination of real-world and digital technologies. The project aligns to EU Green Deal targets and is expected generate skilled employment and economic growth throughout the region.

With billions in investment on the table, soaring AI demand, and a strong commitment to green tech – this Madrid move might just be the beginning of something very big indeed.
